THE SPARROW | AFTER PAINT UPSTAIRS UPDATE
August, 2021
It has been a crazy few months and I wanted to jump on here to update you all on our little bird, and the transformation she is going through! Guys, we are almost done...well, not all the way, but definitely getting closer! With Covid, it has been a struggle to get anything done in a timely manner because people are so booked up, and materials are hard to come by! In the past few months, we had to do a lot of things ourselves on our to-do list BUT thankfully we have a lot of good contractors and amazing friends that have made this process way easier! By the way, the drone picture above it to show you the proximity of our sweet little bird to all things Downtown Staunton! Only a stone's throw away!
This blog is to update you on the upstairs of the house, but the downstairs is totally done being painted as well...we just need to clean before I show you pictures! Stay tuned for the downstairs blog!
LIVING ROOM:
BEFORE:
OH. MY. GOODNESS. Where do we begin? The living room was quite a doozy, but has come a long way! Most of the ceiling was falling down or cracked like crazy, and so the whole ceiling had to be replaced with new drywall. Major cracks were picked and then patched. The trim had to be stripped and the quarter round had to be replaced because it was splintering and yucky. Hardwood floors were refinished. A new gorgeous Schoolhouse style fixture was put in, and NEW PAINT all around including our happy blue front door!

AFTER:

STILL TO DO IN THE LIVING ROOM/FRONT PORCH:
Clean, clean, clean! Outlet covers! Paint the trim around the front door. Put on shutters, and paint them. Spray paint front porch furniture. Make custom window treatments for privacy. Decorate!
KITCHEN:
BEFORE:
The kitchen has changed from what we originally thought we were going to do but in a super good way! We decided on white cabinets, and open upper shelving. Since the beginning, we knew the kitchen layout had to be reworked to make it seem bigger and more open. We put an outlet in the pantry and will put the fridge in there so it is built into the wall. That will allow for space for a small dining table where the fridge initially sat.
We got dark leathered granite countertops installed by our friends at Fenco on W. Beverley, and the hardwood floors were all refinished. All of the trim was repaired with new quarter round. The stove outlet was mounted properly, and a new fixture was installed...and fresh paint!

AFTER:

STILL TO DO IN THE KITCHEN:
Clean, clean, clean! Outlet covers! Build two rows of open shelving for both sides of cabinetry. Get plumbing/faucet installed. Install fridge and stove. Make custom window treatments for privacy. Decorate!
BEDROOMS:
BEFORE:
Both bedrooms were in okay shape, but just needed some updating. They both got the floors refinished, holes and cracks patched, trim repaired and new quarter round, new fixtures, new solid wood doors installed, and painted!
This is the front bedroom off of the living room which will have a queen bed for two:

This is the back "kid" bedroom off of the kitchen which will have two twin beds:

AFTER:

STILL TO DO IN THE UPSTAIRS BEDROOMS:
Clean, clean, clean! Outlet covers! Add a few more outlets for lamps. Make custom window treatments for privacy. Decorate!
EXTERIOR:
BEFORE:
Guys, the outside has been an actual doozy. From years of neglect, we had quite a bit to do! We got the front gutter replaced, and the back rear gutter repaired so it would flow correctly. Gutters were cleaned out (actual tree saplings were taking residence!) The back deck was pressure washed and the whole exterior was pressure washed. The roof was cleaned to remove mold and yuck. The trees all around the property are straight from the Amazon and had to be cut back and cleaned up. The backyard had grass that was two feet tall. Vines and ivy were coming up everywhere and covering the side of the house. The works! We have finally got most of the exterior cleaned up, but we still have some tree work to do to show our amazing view!

AFTER:

STILL TO DO WITH THE EXTERIOR:
We don't have much to do with the exterior except for a few cosmetic things that we plan to do... We are putting lattice to cover the front porch hole. We are putting a new rail on either end of the porch to bring it up to code. New landscaping along front and side. The back deck is being shored up, old planks and rotten boards removed and replaced, and lattice to cover underneath the back deck...and TWINKLE LIGHTS! The front porch is getting new lighting, and all new flood lights around the house for safety. ShutterS for the front porch windows, and the columns repainted, and front porch floor repainted. The Sparrow sign hung up on the front porch. The fence panel installed for privacy and to put trash cans up against. Decorate!
On this side of the house, we plan to put a pea gravel flat area with outdoor seating/s'mores area, and paint where the ivy removed paint....

We are so thankful for our contractors and friends that have helped us along on this journey! We have our contractor knocking out a LOT of projects in the next couple weeks so there will be lots more updates! We are hoping for a fall opening of the Sparrow for guests. So get ready to STAY HERE!
